About VAFCS

The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Urban Indigenous community. Through 23 programs across three locations, we provide culturally grounded services in education, health, social development, and recreation. Our mission is to foster meaningful change and empower Indigenous individuals and families.

We are seeking a highly organized, self-motivated individual with strong community connections and well-developed office administration skills to join our team as a Jordan’s Principle Service Coordinator.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Program Director, the Service Coordinator supports First Nations children and their families by delivering case management, intake, assessments, and service navigation. This role ensures timely access to health, education, and social services while advocating for Indigenous children’s rights under Jordan’s Principle.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary contact for Indigenous children, families, healthcare providers, and communities seeking Jordan’s Principle support.
  • Conduct intake, assessment, and case coordination to connect families with VAFCS programs and external services.
  • Advocate for service access and help families navigate federal, provincial, and Indigenous-led supports.
  • Maintain case documentation and collaborate with community partners.

 

Qualifications & Skills

 

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in social work, health, or a related field or a combination of education and experience.

  

Experience

  • Understanding of social, economic, and political issues affecting Indigenous communities
  • Knowledge of Indigenous values, and cultures.
  • Indigenous background and lived experience from local Indigenous land-based nations or local urban Indigenous community.
  • Familiarity with child and family services, health systems, and Indigenous-led organizations.
  • Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and indigenous organizations mandated to provide health, counselling and Child and Family Services
  • Excellent communication and computer skills (Microsoft Office)

 

Other Requirements:

  • Valid BC Driver’s License and clean abstract.
  • Vancouver Police Department Vulnerable Sector Check.

Background

Jordan’s Principle ensures First Nations children receive the services they need without delays or denials due to jurisdictional disputes. It was named in honor of Jordan River Anderson, a Cree child from Norway House who was denied essential home care due to government inaction.

Position Details

  • Type: Full-time, 12-month contract
  • Hours: 37.5 per week
  • Pay: From $34.00 per hour
  • Location: In-person at VAFCS
